Practical Nursing Program

An LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) provides patient care under supervision of a doctor or a registered nurse.  Some of these duties might be monitoring equipment, bedside care, recording vital signs, wound care and providing patient comfort. LPNs may work in medical offices, hospitals, medical centers, skilled nursing facilities, outpatient centers and government health care agencies. 

Jobs Outlook

According to the Illinois Department of Employment Security the jobs outlook for LPN positions is very strong. The reasons for this strong job outlook is the number of elderly people who will need care in skilled nursing facilities, the number of people who are moved from hospital care to rehabilitation centers and the number of home health programs that are able to deliver more complex care in the home.

Our LPN classes integrate theory, lab and clinical experience to give our graduates the necessary knowledge and skill base to prepare for the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN®).

Application Process

Reach out and let us know your interested in the Practical Nursing program by completing the online form. Make sure you select Alton as the campus and Practical Nursing as the program. A representative will then provide the Practical Nursing application to begin the process: 

1. Complete and submit an application for admission to CALC for the Practical Nursing program and meet with Admissions. All applicants need to be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
2. Register for the HESI A2 Entrance Exam through Elsevier. The HESI scores will be used to rank admission to the program. (Check with admissions for next available exam date) Registration instructions provided during Admission interview.
3. Submit transcripts from all high schools and post-secondary schools attended, and, if applicable, an official GED exam score.
4. Submit two letters of character reference. Letters should be from:  past employers, professionals in business, government or educational occupations, community leaders and etc. No reference from a family member will be accepted. 

Program Schedule

CALC’s Practical Nursing program is a 15-month program requiring attendance full-time, 30 hours per week from 8:15 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Monday through Thursday. The terms are comprised of four 15-week terms and one 5-week term. This final term provides a comprehensive review to prepare students for the NCLEX-PN®.

For clinical experiences, the student needs to be available 24/7 during the program. Breaks and holidays are scheduled periodically throughout the program. Please Contact our Admissions Office for more information about class times and the admissions process.
